After being diagnosed with breast cancer at just 36, Nicola Wood faced first-hand the emotional and isolating impact of hair loss and body image concerns. Frustrated by outdated and impersonal options, she decided to change the experience for others – combining her hairdressing expertise with compassion to create The Wonderful Wig Company, offering bespoke wigs as unique as each client’s own hair.
What started as a personal mission has grown into a nationally recognised brand, supporting over 10,000 clients across the UK. From expert wig fitting and styling to personalised aftercare, Nicola and her team have redefined what compassionate, person-centred care in the beauty industry looks like. She even extended her salon Kitui, Sunderland’s leading independent hair salon, to create the North East’s first purpose-built hair-loss studio – a space that has continually evolved to meet overwhelming demand.
Through her own cancer journey and seeing thousands of clients, Nicola has gained rare insight into how transformative the right wig can be for emotional wellbeing. Her business success is matched by her commitment to charity, having worked with organisations including the Little Princess Trust, Stand Up to Cancer and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Nicola has also been recognised as an official Queen’s Baton Relay bearer and awarded the Gold Standard for Wig Fitters by the Little Princess Trust for her expertise and dedication.
Join us for an inspiring and deeply personal evening as Nicola, our 2025 Impact Award winner, shares the story behind The Wonderful Wig Company – the highs, the hurdles, and the heartfelt moments that have shaped her journey. Hear how she turned adversity into enterprise, helped thousands of women regain confidence, and continues to lead with purpose, authenticity and compassion.
Nicola’s insights, lessons, and reflections will leave you inspired, energised, and ready to reimagine the impact you can have in your own business and life. Spaces are limited, book early to secure your place!
