Having grown up in Middlesbrough during the industrial recession, Andy Preston has experienced first-hand how difficult the road to employment can be.
With a limited job market and no other option, he left his native Teesside for the bright lights of London, via the Air Force and then the University of Edinburgh where he graduated with an MA in Philosophy before kickstarting his career in the City.
Named a ‘rising star’ in the industry, Andy made millions as a stockbroker before returning to his hometown where he was involved in numerous North East Businesses before he switched to a more philanthropic approach.
Andy is a passionate advocate for improving peoples’ lives, particularly those in the Tees Valley. His charitable endeavours include the patronage of international children’s charity, ARC, founding The Teesside Charity (formerly Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation) which has raised over £3m for projects to better the lives of local people and opening ‘The Fork in the Road’. A Middlesbrough based restaurant which was set up to offer work experience, training and volunteering opportunities to help the people of Middlesbrough get back into employment, particularly ex-offenders.
However, his most notable creation to date is the ‘CEO Sleepout’ which he founded in 2014, with its first sleepout taking place at the Riverside Stadium home of Middlesbrough FC in December 2016. This simple idea brings big-hearted business leaders together to experience homelessness by sleeping rough for one night. The charity has become a national phenomenon and is now running in multiple cities across the UK with 5000 participants raising over £3m and helping to change countless lives. The Newcastle CEO Sleepout in 2018 raised over £100,000 alone, making it the charities fifth biggest fundraising event of all time.
Helping others and giving back to the community is Andy’s inspiration and it’s this passion which led him to run for Mayor of Middlesbrough. Having been elected in 2019 Andy is ultimately responsible for Middlesbrough’s budget of c. £360m, and all of it’s economic, social and political progress. He has spearheaded the development of the Tees Advanced Manufacturing Park (TeesAMP), ensuring the town can compete on the global stage, investing in developments which will secure its future as a digital and manufacturing powerhouse.
Join us at our upcoming member event where you will hear Andy talk passionately about his journey so far, where the idea for the CEO Sleepout came from and his ambitions for improving the lives of those living in our region.
