New Deputy Vice-Chancellor to Drive North East University's Commercial Plans

The University of Sunderland has announced that Professor Jon Timmis has been appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Commercial).
Professor Timmis will drive the University’s commercial agenda when he takes up the role in May, contributing to the institution’s continuing sustainability and success.
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Commercial), areas within his remit will include recruitment, marketing and communications, knowledge transfer and exchange, work-based learning, partnerships, philanthropy and alumni relations, and international activity.
Sir David Bell KCB, the University of Sunderland’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, commented: “In Jon Timmis, it is clear that we have made an excellent appointment of a highly regarded academic, and one with a wide range of externally-focused experience.
In a fast-moving and constantly changing higher education sector, we must be bold and innovative to thrive. Our approach is to seize opportunities and collaborate, remaining focused on maintaining the value we offer students and the sustainability of our university. In making all of this happen, I have no doubt that Jon will be an outstanding addition to our University.
In commenting on his appointment, Professor Timmis said: “I’m thrilled to take up the role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Commercial) at the University of Sunderland. The University is going through an exciting transformation and I’m impressed by its plans and ambition.
“For me, universities are fantastic and exciting places, where research and teaching are delivered in an open and welcoming environment. The role of a University in our society is critical and I am thrilled to be joining Sunderland and looking forward to getting started.
Professor Timmis is currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Partnerships and Knowledge Exchange at the University of York, where he leads development of new collaborations with key partners and knowledge exchange activities.
Professor Timmis maintains an active research profile and connections with industry. He is a Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on Research Council UK funding applications, currently supervises a number of PhD students and teaches in the area of Intelligent Robotics.
