* A Gin School "tweet seat" is a free place at Gin School in return for some twitter and social media activity on the night.
SIT up straight, pens down – prepare for a lesson like no other with the introduction of Newcastle’s first Gin School.
This new gin-tasting experience – which includes tastings and interactive talks – aims to cause a stir among spirit-lovers when it launches next month at The Gin Bar, Crowne Plaza, Stephenson Quarter.
Students will learn all about the history, science and art of the quintessentially British spirit, including the distillation process, the art of mixing and the recent gin revival.
Monthly sessions are led by expert ‘ginstructors’ from award-winning distillers including Hendrick’s and Masons of Yorkshire. The guest experts will ensure theory is put into practice with gin sampling, including hints and tips on the best mixers and garnishes.
With a different guide each month, people can sample some of the best gins from the North East, UK and across the globe.
At the end of the night students are awarded a ‘PhG’ certifying them as graduates of the Gin School.
Far from a classroom atmosphere, students can expect a relaxed ambience in The Gin Bar’s informal lounge and a warm welcome from knowledgeable bartenders. The classes themselves are intimate and casual with only 15 students per session.
Ellen Deboeck, general manager of Crowne Plaza Newcastle, said: “I’m sure that this is one school that people will be eager to revisit.
“I’d encourage everyone to bring their friends and be prepared for a night that’s as fun as it is fascinating.”
Bar manager Will Young said: “I’m thrilled to be launching our Gin School. It’s long been a dream of ours to educate people and encourage debate about this incredible spirit.
“We’re extremely proud of our North East roots, which is why we stock so many local gins alongside the classics.
“Since we launched, The Gin Bar has really set itself apart as a place with a brilliant selection of cocktails, excellent customer service and a friendly atmosphere.”
This month also sees the launch of The Gin Bar’s new drinks menu, as well as Hawthorns brasserie’s spring food menu.
New additions to the menu include cocktails exclusive to The Gin Bar, such as the Tyneside Fizz, made with Durham Gin, lemon, elderflower and prosecco.
Connoisseurs can taste local legends such as Durham Gin as well as unusual international varieties like Gin Mare from Spain and Death’s Door from the east coast of the USA.
Gin School runs the first Thursday of every month, beginning on May 4 featuring Hepple Gin.
People that book before May 4 will receive an introductory offer of 50 per cent off the individual session price – normally £30 for an individual class or £50 for two.
