School holidays for brothers Roger and Ben Crosby often meant a 4am van drive with their dad to the pottery factories of Stoke-on-Trent.

“We grew up in a family business and both started selling crockery at school. There are teachers across the North East with ‘I shot JR’ mugs that we sold them,” says former bank manager Roger, now sales director of Crosbys.

A catering equipment supplier that has worked with just about every restaurant and commercial kitchen in the North East, it initially supplied crockery, cutlery and glassware, later expanding into light and heavy catering equipment.

For the likes of Rockcliffe Hall Hotel and, most recently, Tyneside Metropolitan College, they supply everything from teaspoons to multi burner ovens for a 2,000sq ft kitchen.

Turnover, at £2.3m, is 25 times what it was when Roger and former professional golfer Ben first joined and transformed the business soon after their dad started it in 1990, on the cusp of a culture change in food appreciation and eating out.

Based in Newcastle, they now have 17 staff, three warehouses and a showroom, with customers from Berwick to North Yorkshire and, increasingly, nationally thanks to their new website.
