Nine years ago lawyer and company secretary Julie Flanagan and her colleague Ann Cottman took a bank loan and remortgaged their homes to buy part of the business they worked for.
In its first year Eliesha Training had a very respectable turnover of £750K with just a handful of clients; within two years the partners had paid off their bank borrowings.
Nine years on and the business has grown to £6m turnover with 50 regular clients, 45 staff and 200 associates and headquarters in Newcastle and Cardiff – and they’ve never borrowed another penny.
Named after the daughter Julie had on the same day as they acquired the business, the translation of Eliesha as ‘sweetly blissful’ sums up the happy ship it is today.
And that’s in spite of it being heavily dependent on substantial public sector contracts with the likes of the Welsh Assembly, police and fire services, local government and Royal Mail.
Mum-of-five Julie says it’s good luck that contracts are two-five years and lead to long term qualifications, though good judgement surely plays a part.
Their services have also grown from leadership and management training to psychometric testing, assessment and development and HR work.
Julie is optimistic government cuts will lead to more outsourcing opportunities, while their private sector client list is growing too.
