They say fortune favours the brave, and this is certainly one of those tales.
Andrew Ward began Workwear Express over 20 years ago when, aged 17, he bought an old van and travelled the length and breadth of the UK selling workwear and leisurewear from the back of it.
Now, together with his wife Angie, the company has grown to become a leading supplier of workwear, uniforms, leisurewear and promotional clothing to organisations throughout the UK and Europe, with a list of clients including Sage, Rolls Royce, Greggs, Little Chef and webuyanycar.com.
Hit by the recession, Andrew talks freely about the challenges the business faced in 2008 and 2009 when a number of clients were forced to cut back on their investments. Having moved to larger premises just two years earlier, it was do or die for the Belmont based firm.
After improving operating methods, increasing the breadth of services and developing new routes to trade, they didn’t just protect their position in the market, they grew their share of it.
Says Andrew, “I’m proud of the way we took the bull by the horns and made significant changes to the way we do business, and we continue to look at ways to expand.”
